The San Francisco Bay Area includes five distinctive regions: North Bay The North is comprised of Marin and Sonoma Counties. Marin County is one of the most affluent counties in the nation. San Francisco San Francisco is the center point and most well known city in the Bay Area. Nicknamed “City by the Bay” and “Fog City”, San Francisco is known for its steep hills, cable cars, cold, foggy summers and large earthquakes. The Golden Gate Bridge is an international symbol for San Francisco and the Bay Area. East Bay The East Bay is comprised of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, including the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, and Walnut Creek. The East Bay is a very large, diverse area featuring both bayside and inland cities and towns. Peninsula The Peninsula is located between the South Bay and the city of San Francisco. It is comprised of San Mateo County, and the northern part of Santa Clara County. The peninsula is very diverse. Cities include Burlingame, San Mateo, & Half Moon Bay. The Silicon Valley boom has had a dramatic impact on the population and demographics of the peninsula, bringing in many middle and upper class families to the area. South Bay The South Bay is home to Silicon Valley and many large technology companies. It includes the city of San Jose, the Bay Area’s largest city as well as some of the Bay Area’s most affluent cities and towns including Palo Alto, Los Altos and Mountain View.
